A-Level Top Scorers Celebrate Their Achievements at Sunway

The Sunway College A-Level tea party, a bi-annual event was held recently to acknowledge and celebrate students’ achievements in the June 2016 Cambridge International A-Levels examinations. Students of this cohort achieved a 100% pass rate with 32 students having achieved 4A*s.

Many have received offers and secured places in some of the top universities in the world. Among them are Lai Dee Loon who received an offer to pursue Engineering in the University of Cambridge, Saheb Singh with an offer to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics in the University of Warwick and Nur Aina Muhammad Naim who secured a place at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia.

Cambridge International Exams Training at Sunway

Sunway played host to more than 60 A Level teachers from various Cambridge GCE A Level Centres from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, India and China for the recent two-day Cambridge International Exams (CIE) Intermediate A Levels Professional Development Training Courses at Sunway.

The 2-day Professional Development training for teachers of the Cambridge syllabuses of Intermediate Cambridge AS and A Level in Accounting, Business, Economics, Law and English Language were conducted by CIE trainers selected by the CIE training department in the UK. The English Language subject was introduced as a new subject.

Sunway College’s A Level students win gold and silver at International Mathematical Olympiad 2014

Two students from Sunway College recently returned home with gold and silver medals from the 10-day International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2014 held in Cape Town, South Africa. A-Level students Anzo Teh Zhao Yang won the gold whilst Khong Yi Kye secured the silver. Collectively with three others, the Malaysia team ranked 23rd. It is Malaysia’s best international ranking ever attained since it first participated in 1995. Anzo together with another teammate contributed to the country’s second and third gold since the first IMO gold in 2011.

The IMO, an extremely intensive and competitive mathematics competition, is one of the oldest, biggest and most prestigious of all the international science Olympiads. Participants are tested with questions ranging from precalculus to other mathematical branches not conventionally covered in schools or at university level, such as projective and complex geometry, functional equations and well-grounded number theory, of which extensive knowledge of theorems is required.

Top A-level Scorers from Sunway College

Sunway’s A-level top scorers and returning alumni from top universities gathered at a recently held A-level Tea Party by Sunway College celebrating the accomplishment of students in the June 2014 Cambridge examinations.

Among those present were Henry Lee Min Rong, who scored 4 A*s in Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Articulate and cheerful, Henry is pleased to have been offered a place in Jesus College, University of Oxford to study Mechanical Engineering in October. “A-level was arguably the fast track to top universities. My experience at Sunway College has been truly challenging as it involves a lot of self-motivation and independent study in a university campus setting that is different from high school,” said Lee.

Triple-A Celebration

Former Sunway’s A level student is the Toastmaster Champion

Aaron Ng Ji Yeon, former Sunway’s A level student pitted against seven native speakers from across Victoria, Australia and won first place at the 2014 District 73 International Speech Contest, organised by Toastmasters International in Melbourne.

Aaron is a Business Commerce student in Monash University Caufield. He transferred from Monash University Malaysia in 2013. Prior to that, Aaron did his A levels at Sunway College Kuala Lumpur.

Sunway A-Level students are Top in the World

At the recent Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards (OCLA) ceremony, nine Sunway A-Level students were awarded certificates for their excellent performance in the June 2013 Cambridge examination series.

Students from Sunway College who received the Top in the World Award for CIE AS level were; Daphne Ngan Hwee Ern for Accounting, Ang Eer Yin, Ho Shi Ying, Kuan Wei Jee, Loh Khang Yee and Tan Tee Toon for Mathematics while Leong Wei Cheng and Dawn Soon Lyn Hui from Sunway College Johor Bahru each received the Top in Malaysia Award for General Paper.

The ultimate Cambridge experience for Sunway A-Level student

Ng Zhu Shen, a former Sunway A-Level student has successfully transferred to the University of Cambridge to pursue a degree in Engineering. Having returned after a year for a short break, Zhu Shen relates his experience studying in this prestigious university, “Cambridge is the best university in the world and the highlight would be its strong academic environment. We have lectures, practical and coursework to focus on and are each assigned to a tutor to help us in our studies.” He enthusiastically shared an example of one of his lecturers who threw a boomerang in the middle of a class while explaining its underlying theories and mechanism.
