Looi Shin Yee, currently in her second year at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle shared her views on work, the city she lives in and the people. The Bachelor of Science with a Major in Economics student who works on campus encouraged students to work while studying for real world exposure. Looi, a KPM (Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia) scholar completed her A-Level at Sunway College in 2013 and went on to University of Washington under the Public Service Department (JPA) scholarship.

“I work at an on-campus catering company. According to law, international students are only allowed to work on campus but it is not such a bad thing. I used to work at the service department which involves getting the food, plates, linens and other things to the event venue and setting up the tables. Some of the events require our attendance, in these cases, we work as waiters too,” she explains. Asides from earning extra cash, Looi finds there is a lot to learn from working.
“All students are required to take classes from all fields regardless of their majors. I went into NYU as a biology major, expecting to only take biology classes but nope; I attended a literature class in my first semester” said Liew Khye Borg who is currently in New York University (NYU), New York pursuing the Bachelor of Science with a Major in Chemistry. At the session, he shared on the flexibility of the programmes at NYU, making new friends and life in New York City. Liew also received the KPM scholarship for his A-Level studies at Sunway College while his tuition fees at NYU is covered by the JPA scholarship.
