Well-rounded straight-A students reap from teaching and experiences in Sunway A-Levels

Sunway College A-Level students who sat the June 2012 examinations did the college proud when 121 of them (45% of the students) scored straight-As and 100% passes. This is the largest group of straight-A students so far achieved by the A-level programme. Most in the group have secured places in top universities in the UK, US, Australia and Singapore. Among them, Oh Yue Jin received an offer to pursue Biological Sciences at Oxford University while Fiona Tay Ting Nuan was given an offer to read Mathematics, also at Oxford University. Ng Zhu Shen secured a place in Cambridge University to study engineering.

Fiona joined the A-level programme when her team from Catholik High School, Petaling Jaya emerged champion in the Sunway College Math & Logic Competition in 2009. Fiona’s love for math influenced her decision to choose mathematics.

Oh Yue Jin whose fascination with biology started when he was 7 years old, said that he would love to be in a career where he could participate in the discovery of new things and where there is balance between field and lab work. On the A-level programme, Yue Jin said “The A-level programme was a fruitful experience as the lecturers were very inspiring and they encouraged the students to expand their knowledge”.

Many of the straight A students also managed to participate in LIAMST a.k.a “Love is a Many-Splendoured Thing!” musical, a celebration of popular western love songs and dances from 1900 to 1980. The students performed, played instruments and were involved in the production of the highly successful two-and-a-half hour musical which was staged in July this year. Sunway College collaborated with the Kiwanis Club of Sri Petaling on the musical. The funds raised from the sale of tickets were donated to Montford Boys Town.

“The students are fine examples of how one can successfully balance obligations of study with extra-curricular activities. They have worked hard while developing themselves and we are proud of them”, said Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group.
