Sunway TES Team is the Premier League Enterprise’s IEC Global Champion

Five students from Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence (Sunway TES CAE) stormed to victory and emerged as the Global Champion at the Premier League Enterprise’s International Enterprise Challenge (IEC) 2015/16.

The Champion, Team Kaki Bangku is an all-female team comprised of students Janice Kung Shu-En, Cheong Kah Xuan, Yong Cui Ning, Tan Ching Hui and Jossmita Pillai, who have chosen Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) CFAB-ICAEW pathway at Sunway TES CAE. The team came a long way through a few preliminary challenges before winning the grand final of the IEC.

Premier League’s Enterprise’s International Enterprise Challenge 2015/2016 saw active participation from Sunway TES for the second consecutive year

The IEC is a partnership between the British Council and the Premier League which aims to engage, encourage and inspire 14-18 year old students in developing and unlocking their business and enterprise skills through real life examples drawn from the commercial football sector, mainly the Premier League. Participants were judged by their ideas, creativity, presentation slides and skills, time management, teamwork and research.

The IEC was first brought to Sunway TES CAE in early 2014 by Stephen Lee How Hwang, Sunway TES CAE Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) alumnus. Stephen, currently the Assistant Manager of Sunway Group Internal Audit was one of five mentors from Malaysia who were involved in a 6-day training programme in Danang, Vietnam in 2014 by trainers from the Premier League. The training programme enabled them to run workshops and competitions for participants in their affiliated institutions.

Teo Ee Sing, Executive Director of Sunway College was pleased with Stephen’s efforts in introducing and running the competition at Sunway TES CAE. “Here at Sunway, we encourage our students to participate in any kind of competition and activities to gain exposure to grow into all-rounded individuals.”

The first wave of challenge held on 30 January 2016 saw an intense competition between 12 teams of Sunway TES students. They were challenged to imagine themselves working in a football club’s marketing department who were asked to develop a strategy of encouraging attending fans to spend more time at the stadium on match days, including commercial opportunities that this could generate. The aim was to both improve and extend attending fans’ experience on match days. To help the participants with this challenge, a 2-day intensive workshop on football, soft skills, and presentation skills was provided and conducted by Stephen at Sunway University.

Team Kaki Bangku’s champion idea was creating a “Prime Time Card” which firstly records and traces the amount of time football fans spent in a stadium, and secondly enables card members to accumulate points via participating in games and other activities before and after the football match as well as purchases of merchandises. Points accumulated can later be redeemed within 3 years for discounted merchandises, rebates, special VIP seats, exclusive stadium tours and limited edition football related gifts.

Team Owl, consisting of CFAB-ICAEW students Teh Wei Ying, Lee Yi Ling, Ong Ming Hong, and Doohan Lim Sweking emerged as First Runner Up. Team Ventures comprised of CAT-ACCA students Yong Zhi Yan, Alyssa Gun Voon Huey, Dicky Tan Jun Xin, and Lee Jia Qing finished the challenge at third placing.

Doohan commented that the workshops, provided by Stephen, were some of the greatest takeaways from the IEC as they were interesting and informative, which could be useful in real life. Another participant, CFAB-ICAEW student Wong Chien concurred and expressed that the experience gained was priceless as his team was able to complete the competition in the midst of exams.

Team Kaki Bangku then represented Sunway TES CAE with the same business proposal. They competed against participants from other local institutions and emerged as national champion on 20 February 2016.

Hinging on the same momentum, Team Kaki Bangku prepared a 5-minute video and a business plan for the International level. With their submission, they impressed the UK-based judges from Premier League and British Council and outshined other national winners from Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. Team Kaki Bangku from Sunway TES CAE finally grabbed the champion title of the International Enterprise Challenge 2015/16.
