Twenty-three awarded the Sunway TES – ICAEW Global Accountant Scholarship

As a rule of thumb, continue to work hard and persevere to realise your full potential”, said Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway University and Sunway Education Group at the Sunway TES-ICAEW Global Accountant Scholarship presentation ceremony.

On 16 March, twenty three students from 16 different schools across Malaysia of the January 2015 intake were on hand to receive the Sunway TES-ICAEW Global Accountant Scholarship amounting about RM1 million for a 2 and 1/2 year Certificate and Professional studies in the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) programme at Sunway TES. The scholarship covers full tuition fees with a registration and exam fees waiver by ICAEW.

The ICAEW Chartered Accountant qualification, the Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ACA), is one of the most advanced learning and professional development programmes available, valued around the world in business, practice and the public sector. The ACA is regarded globally as one of the leading business and finance qualifications, recognised and valued in practice, industry, commerce and the public sector. It seamlessly merges examinations with practical on-the-job training to equip students with the relevant experience, skills and professional knowledge to make sound decisions in genuine business environments.

Michael Izza, Chief Executive, ICAEW, United Kingdom in addressing the students said, “You are just about to start on what could be the most exciting career opportunity. Also in attendance were Mark Billington, Regional Director, ICAEW South East Asia; Dato’ Gan Ah Tee, Chairman of ICAEW City Group Malaysia & Managing Partner, BDO; Loh Wei Yuen, Head of ICAEW Malaysia together with Teo Ee Sing, Executive Director, Sunway College and Lim Tiew Ming, Director of Financial Courses Division, Sunway College.

Sunway TES started the scholarship scheme in 2013 with 2 recipients and last year in 2014, 84 students were awarded the scholarships. To be eligible for the scholarship, recipients have to have obtained at least 9As in their SPM exams. Scholarship recipients in the programme have done well in their exams for all the subjects, the pass rate stands at 90% and above.

Sunway College is part of the Sunway Education Group which is owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, a unique structure in the field of private education in Malaysia and a not-for-profit entity dedicated to providing education opportunities for deserving students.
