Three Teo Siblings at Sunway

“We chose Sunway for our children as we heard good things about the quality of education that is provided here and the lecturers too“, said Teo Woon Kong, proud and happy father of three who studied AUSMAT at Sunway College. Teo and his wife, Wong Siew Fun both agreed that the AUSMAT programme at Sunway taught their children to think critically. They grew confident when their eldest daughter Teo Shu Wen got good results in her examinations and from her feedback that her lecturers were very concerned and helpful when it came to the students.

Shu Wen, the eldest of the Teo siblings is currently a Senior Tax Consultant in Singapore. After the AUSMAT programme, she continued with the Bachelor of Business and Commerce majoring in Accounting and Banking & Finance at Monash University Malaysia. She cites that that life lessons learned during her time at Sunway has contributed to her current work life. “Individual and group class assignments taught me to think critically and out of the box. They also taught me to be independent, and that I think contributes tremendously in preparing students such as myself for the outside world,” she added. “I am so fortunate to have full support from my parents and worthy guidance whenever I need them. Without my parents, I wouldn’t be who and where I am today,” said Shu Wen who never gives up all challenges given to her. While in Malaysia, she continuously supported and participated in the 30 Hour Famine organised by World Vision Malaysia.

Shu Wen’s experience at Sunway influenced her two younger siblings Jun Ming and Shu Mei to also take up the AUSMAT programme at Sunway College. Jun Ming received the Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship for the AUSMAT programme and the Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship for the BSc (Hons) Accounting & Finance at Sunway University after. He is currently pursuing professional papers in ACCA at Sunway TES. “I like the programme as its 50% exam based and 50% coursework, it is good preparation for degree programmes,” said Jun Ming of the AUSMAT programme. A strong supporter of World Animal Protection and the World Wide Fund for Nature, Jun Ming helped to teach underprivileged kids at SMK Puchong on weekends. He pays tribute to his parents, “Undoubtedly, my parents are the ones that I always look up to. They spent precious time and money, through sweat and tears to nurture and provide us with a good education. Without them, I would not be where I am today.”

Youngest amongst the siblings, Shu Mei starts her BSc (Hons) Actuarial Studies at Sunway University this year. Having recently completed the AUSMAT programme, Biology, Chemistry and Maths being her favourite subjects she says “The classrooms settings were akin to international learning standards with interactive learning, it is easy to communicate with the lecturers especially during consultation time and the student mentors were very helpful too.” A fan of horror movies, Shu Mei also supports the World Wide Fund for Nature, “I think it is really important that people should be concerned about the environment, our earth is sick and the sickness is getting serious as time goes by.” Inspired by Nick Vujicic, his quote “The challenges in our lives are there to strengthen our convictions. They are not there to run us over", has helped motivate her not to give up and to appreciate all that she has. “In life, undoubtedly there will be challenges, to overcome them is often not easy so we must always stay positive,” said the eighteen year old lass. The Teo family, when asked whether they would recommend Sunway to their friends and family, happily replied in the affirmative.
