The ‘Unpredictable’ turned out to be the Most Rewarding for the FIA Graduates

“If there’s a word I’d use to sum up my life, it would be ‘unpredictable’,” said Chloe Tee Tze Ling, valedictorian of the Sunway College Foundation in Arts (FIA) 13th Graduation Ceremony.

Celebrating the graduation with other 142 graduates, Chloe said that FIA was one of the best choices she ever made even though the pre-university programme was not her first choice. She is grateful for the FIA experience as the lecturers, whom she referred to as teachers, were caring and encouraging in helping her and her fellow graduates build a solid foundation for their future undertakings.

Sharing this similar experience, Muhd Hazim bin Dahuli and Ria Heryani binti Mumfahir, came a long way to this celebratory moment. At 23 years old, both graduates are comparatively older than their peers. Both were Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) scholarship recipients who were sent to Russia to pursue their medical degrees but returned to Malaysia due to extreme conditions there. Here they chose to continue studies in the FIA programme.

At the graduation ceremony, a surprise was in store for both Muhd Hazim and Ria for their outstanding performance throughout their programme. With an average score of more than 90 percent, Hazim received a full scholarship to continue his desired Psychology degree at Sunway University.

Ria who achieved high distinction with an average score above 80 percent, along with 9 other fellow graduates received partial scholarships valued at 50 or 75 percent in tuition bursaries to pursue further studies in selected undergraduate programmes at Sunway University. Ria’s fellow scholarship recipients were Avery Choke Kar Sing, Cheryl Chin Huey Wynn, Chew Li Yin, Choo Han Lin, Han Guan Ting, Jeremy See To RongYao, Lim Kok Chin, Lim Meng Yee, Lin Wai Yang, Michelle Chin Shu Fern, Michelle Toh Chia Ling, and Tan Pin-Xiu.

Graduates who displayed consistent academic performance in certain particular subjects were also presented with the Vice-Chancellor Subject Award; Lin Wai Yang for Accounting and Finance, and Mathematics; Avery Choke Kar Sing for Communication and Information Technology; Kimberley Koh Swee Peng for Economics and Management; Ria for English; and Hazim for Enrichment Subjects.

Aspiring actuary Lin Wai Yang who was also awarded with the Certificate of Achievement for demonstrating exemplary academic improvement since semester one and great leadership skills throughout the FIA programme was utterly surprised. Lin believes hard work and guidance from his FIA lecturers helped him tremendously on this achievement and he has high hopes for a brighter future.

Apart from exceptional academia, the FIA programme at Sunway College values all-rounded achievements. Valedictorian Chloe along with Looi Pei Min and Ching Su Min were awarded Certificates of Appreciation for noteworthy contributions towards students and the college as student committee members.

A Special Award of Recognition was presented to four FIA graduates Yim Soon Keat, Avery Choke, Ria and Hazim of team Sunway P4 who were champions in the Big History Inter Campus Quiz Challenge which was hosted by History Channel Asia, Astro and Petrosains. The champions demonstrated excellent knowledge of history and science whilst pitted against 16 teams from other universities and colleges across Malaysia. This is further proof that the FIA programme at Sunway College equally prioritises both students’ academic and extra-curricular development.

On hand at the graduation were proud parents who joined in the joyous celebration, some with happy tears. Hazim’s father, Dahuli Endra, headmaster of a primary school in Sabah was proud of his son’s achievement in spite of the limited parental scrutiny and time spent with him. He was relieved and glad to have entrusted his son with Sunway College and will continue to allow his son to pursue his undergraduate study at Sunway University.
