It’s all about ‘Sharity’ and Unity with MUFY

If anything, the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) students are well-aware and more than willing to be a part of the MUFY ‘Sharity’ Carnival, a charity event organised annually. ‘Sharity’, held at the Energy Hub cafeteria was overflowing with energy as teachers and students made their way over to purchase delicious food and drinks, fashionable clothes, games, beautiful accessories and even pampered themselves with manicures and pedicures.

The bazaar, put together by the teachers and students of MUFY had one goal, to make as much money as possible for the Paediatric Oncology Unit of University Medical Centre (UMMC). The proceeds worth RM 13,500 were channelled into the funding of a crucial test for patients. The test accurately determines the type of medicine as well as the most appropriate dosage for each individual that will ensure their survival rates increase from 50% to at least 88%.

Tinesswaraan Ramish, a 2nd semester MUFY student said, “The MUFY ‘Sharity’ event is a festival of giving, backed with positive energy and strong volunteerism. It is a platform where all MUFY students come together, develop new ideas, co-operate and learn to work with each other towards a purpose. At the same time, we also learn to be spontaneous and have fun along the way.”

Another event organised by MUFY is the annual talent search competition, themed the MUFY idol with an objective of encouraging students to showcase their various talents that ultimately helps hone their confidence and social skills. This activity also promotes and enhances student-lecturer communication, which in turn facilitates a better learning environment in the long run.

For the vocals category, Nurul Nabila Azhar, Ooi Jia Xuan and Nicholas Su Kwong Yew won the first, second and third place respectively while Jevishna Nair, Da Happy Lockers and Pavithra Shakthi won the dance category in first, second and third placing respectively. Regardless of the category, first place, second place and third place winners took home cash-prizes worth RM250, RM200 and RM150 respectively.

Tinesswaraan who also played emcee during the MUFY Idol said, “Events such as these are not only fun-filled but also tests a student’s capability in handling an event. Apart from leadership qualities, our own ideas and creativity were put to the test and the independence and autonomy that comes from it is truly fulfilling.” He added, “The most memorable part of these two activities is when all students, despite of their race, culture, nationality and even courses, danced along together. It is the sense of belonging and unity that enriches our college experience.”
