Karen Toh Hui Qi received the Shield of Excellence for her high academic achievement and her invaluable contribution to programme activities. Karen was also a subject award winner for English as Additional Language/Dialect and the President of the AUSMAT Student Council. Karen said, “The AUSMAT programme is a positive transition in comparison to the SPM examinations. My participation in programme activities is not a detriment to my studies as I know my priorities.” Karen also acknowledged the lecturers for being dedicated, was grateful for a well-equipped library and stressed that there should be a good balance between studying and play.

Classmate, Goh Wen Yun, the subject award winner for Mathematics 3C/3D, Chemistry and Physics also received the Academic High Achievement award for being the student with the highest academic achievement, based on her best 4 subjects in the WACE school-based assessments. Goh explained that the small classroom setting enabled her to get personal attention from lecturers and she was often chosen to speak which helped her gain self-confidence. She also shared how she had learnt plenty from her friends and attributes this experience to developing her qualities and skills sought after by organisations. She added, “The Sunway AUSMAT programme has truly broadened my perspective of things through the debates I participated in and I am fortunate to have learnt how others think.”
Other subject award winners were Karuna Tan Yi Wen (English), Farah Nursyahirah binti Nordin (Mathematics 3A/3B), Davin Jie Arifin (Mathematics Specialist), Theepah Maran (Biological Sciences), Ong Shang Kheng (Accounting and Business Management & Enterprise), Chiam Joo Yee (Psychology), Teh Min Yi (Economics), Wong Keit Sean (Career & Enterprise) and Kang Jiun Hong (Politics & Law).
A total of 14 subject awards were given out to students who topped the class in their respective subjects. Each award recipient received AUD 100 and a congratulatory letter from one of the following; the Faculty of Professions, University of Adelaide; Faculty of Health Sciences, Curtin University; University of Western Australia Business School or the Sunway University Business School, in recognition of their outstanding achievement.
Karen, who was also the Valedictorian during Graduation Night said, “Sunway College has not only provided us and our proud seniors with 25 years of trailblazing education but also a wholesome education as college students. So many memories have been woven in the past year. To those who are relieved that you’re finally absolved of this weight, smile and truly savour this moment. After having one foot placed beyond college and eager to leave after such a long time, you can finally step out to pursue your wildest dreams and desires in life.”
