Bringing technology to a needy school

A group of students currently pursuing their ACCA and CAT at Sunway College, showed that they cared. They helped to transport 15 personal computers from Sunway Education Group and set up the computer laboratory at SRJK Ulu Yam Baharu.

This was part of the students’ community enrichment project under their Moral Studies class to reach out to the less–privileged communities. The computers were donated by Sunway Education Group.

According to student, Siow Yeong Yuen, the school was founded in 1919. “Although it turned 94 years old this year, the school had no computers,” said Siow. “In fact, some of the students have never used a computer before. We held a session teaching them how to use the computers.”

The majority of the students in SRJK ULU Yam Baharu are Malays, while there are about 20 Orang Asli, and a minority of Chinese and Indian students. They mainly communicate using Bahasa Malaysia in school. “Because the standard of English was so poor, we decided to come up with activities and games in English to help the children improve themselves, while having fun at the same time,” added Siow.

Another activity which benefited the Primary Six children was the “Moshi Moshi Mentor Mentee” activity. “Moshi means ‘hello’ in Japanese,” explained John Loo Keat Leong, Event Coordinator 1, who gave a speech thanking the school principal, Puan Halimah bt. Moosa, for the opportunity to visit the school.

“The purpose of the activity is for each of us to have two mentees from the pupils of SK Ulu Yam. We asked about their background, interests, hobbies, comments on this trip to their school, and their details, in order for us to keep in touch with them,” he said. “We exchanged email addresses so that we will be able to keep in contact with each other. “

At a simple presentation ceremony, Acting Head of the Department or MOHE Compulsory Subjects, Sunway Education Group, Noor Zaidi Mohd Noor officially gave away the computers to the school.

Prior to the visit, the students managed to sell ice blended drinks at a price of RM4 per cup, raising a total of RM364 after deducting the costs incurred. The money was used to provide lunch for the students of SRJK Ulu Yam Baharu during the visit.
