BEEN THERE, DONE THAT’ SUNWAY ALUMNI FORUM

Sunway A-Level outstanding alumni share their experiences with current students

Bandar Sunway, 27 July, 2012 – An Alumni Forum was held recently with the alumni of Sunway College’s A-Levels programme, who returned to the college to share their wealth of knowledge and experiences with current pre-university students of Sunway College.


Guests of Honour present during the Forum was Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr. Susan Cheah wife of Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, the Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group.

Returning to their alma mater, the selected alumni, Jacintha Tagal, Sarah Zulaikha, Xander Chong and Wendy Chen completed the Sunway A-levels before continuing at prestigious universities within the United States (U.S.) and United Kingdom (U.K.) such as Harvard University in the U.S. and The University of Cambridge, The University of Oxford and London School of Economics the U.K.
During the sharing session, the four alumni shared broad experiences they accumulated throughout their journey – from the initial stages of applying to universities to life itself in university; managing the practical aspects of living and learning at these world class institutions.

Sarah Zulaikha a graduate of Medicine at The University of Cambridge said, “It was always my dream to apply to The University of Cambridge and so when the opportunity arose, I immediately applied. Although a challenge at times, I thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout my university years as I managed to find a good balance between learning and fun activities. I have always challenged myself to put 100% into all that I do so that when push comes to shove, I know that I have tried my best. I encourage all of you to do the same too.”

Jacintha Tagal who graduated from Harvard University in East Asian Studies said that at university, one should always strive to enjoy learning. “Do not be afraid to ask questions and participate during discussions” she shared.

For Wendy Chen, who has completed first year in Actuarial Science at the London School of Economic said “University is a time to put away shyness and pride. Do try and get involved in university life. There is so much that one can learn from and grow from being in that environment”.

Xander Chong, who studied Biochemistry at Oxford University advised that it is always good to prepare early for assignments at university so that one is ready to manage other tasks that may come in unexpectedly.

The four alumni also unanimously acknowledged the invaluable learning experiences they received during their studies in the A-levels at Sunway College, which laid the solid foundation of their journey into tertiary studies. According to them, Sunway provided a conducive learning environment supported by experienced lecturers who genuinely cared about students’ welfare.

Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, the Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group stated, “I am proud of these four individuals who have experienced learning at these world class institutions and would like to thank them for taking the time to come and speak to the next generation of Sunway graduates. The Sunway Education Group was formed based on my personal passion and vision to see young minds being educated and I see great potential in each one of you. I encourage all current Sunway students to continue working hard and pursue their dream education.”

This Sunway Alumni Forum was organised by the Alumni Office of Sunway Education Group in collaboration with PrePARE Career Services, the core of Sunway Career Services, designed to equip both degree and college students with the right tools and essential skills, aiming to create ‘employable’ graduates.

As Sunway Education Group celebrates its 25 years of trailblazing education this year, it continues its commitment in caring for its community of students and staff with the goal of shaping Malaysia’s Education landscape. Sunway College offers pre-university courses, professional accounting qualifications such as ACCA, ICAEW and CAT as well as twinning degree programmes with Victoria University.
