RUN FOR EDUCATION Sunway College raised funds to sponsor tuition for underprivileged children

Bandar Sunway, 16 April, 2012 – As part of Sunway Education Group's 25th Anniversary, Sunway College launched the inaugural Sunway College Run for Education (“the Run”) which was held on Sunday 8 April at 7 am.

The 5.1 kilometer (km) route around Bandar Sunway saw the participation of roughly 400 students, staff and members of the public who jointly raised approximately RM4,000 to support this noble cause. The organising chairperson who originally mooted the idea is Steve Thong Jun Nam, a student of the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY), a pre-university programme offered by Sunway College.

The proceeds generated from the Run will be channeled towards funding tuition classes for underprivileged children from Homes around the Klang Valley who are preparing for their SPM exams. Tuition for Mathematics and English subjects will be the main focus of the classes which will be taught to these children over a period of 10 months.

The objective of the Run is to raise funds and contribute towards providing education opportunities for underprivileged children in a sustainable manner. It aspires to touch the lives of hundreds of underprivileged children in the long run, “A Child at a Time”, and will become an annual event organised by the MUFY.

The MUFY committee also hopes the Run will inspire staff and students and help them realize the important role they are playing in helping underprivileged children receive help for tuition classes. Steve shared “I would like to thank the participants on behalf of the children and teenagers who will be benefiting from the tuition and hope that this help can really make a difference in their lives”.

The Champion in the Women’s category was Marie-Josee Talbot, a lecturer of the Sunway International School (SIS) while Virginia Chow, also an SIS lecturer was First Runner-up. Michelle C. Mah was Second Runner-up. In the Men’s category, Jason Loh Chwan Chyin was the Champion, Marvin A/L Madhavan was First Runner–up and Jeremy Chin Ee Wai was Second Runner-up.

On the participation and success of the inaugural Run, Executive Director of Sunway Education Group, Ms. Elizabeth Lee said, “Being a part of the Run, whether a participant or as part of the organising committee, required a lot of dedication and commitment. I am very proud of our students and staff who willingly availed themselves to be a part of this programme. It is important for all of us to count our blessings and realize that not everyone has the necessary means to afford tuition.”

The official T-shirt supplier, Microsports Enterprise sponsored the trophies, refreshments and first aid for the Run.

This year is Sunway Education Group’s 25th Anniversary and the Sunway College Run for Education is one of several events to be held throughout the year to celebrate the Group’s 25 years in Education, shaping Malaysia’s Education landscape. Sunway College is the first educational institution under the Sunway Education Group, established in 1987 by Chairman of the Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO.
