Launch of Deloitte Tax Challenge 2011

The fourth edition of the Deloitte Tax Challenge was launched in Sunway University recently. Jointly officiated by Mr Teo Ee Sing, Executive Director of Sunway TES, the financial courses arm of Sunway and Mr. Yee Wing Peng, the Managing Director of Deloitte KassimChan Tax Services Sdn. Bhd, the Deloitte Tax Challenge is the only event of its kind in Malaysia which promotes the Tax profession as a career to undergraduates of all universities here.

Mr. Teo Ee Sing said in his welcome address during the launch, “Sunway-TES is pleased to play a role and help achieve the objectives of this challenge. We hope to diminish the myth in the tax profession and at the same time expose students into the world of tax before they pursue their career pathway”.

Mr Yee Wing Peng, Managing Director of Deloitte KassimChan Tax Services Sdn Bhd said in his speech, “Where you have thousands of immensely talented undergraduates contesting to outsmart each other in taxation knowledge, the best talents emerge. We are hopeful that those who choose Deloitte as the launching pad of their career aspirations will be successfully groomed and developed into highly sought after tax specialists in the country as well as internationally.”

Also present was Nizar Najib, Executive Director of Deloitte KassimChan Tax Services Sdn Bhd who presented a speech on talent management. Nizar Najib was a student of Sunway TES who pursued his studies in the ICAEW ACA.

The Deloitte Tax Challenge was implemented in an effort to promote taxation as a career option to undergraduates of all faculties in universities in Malaysia. First launched in 2008 by the then CEO of the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, the Deloitte Tax Challenge saw an increase in the participations numbers. From 56 to 80 teams for the team challenge and 1,192 to 1,843 participants, the number of teams and participants have increased in 2010 compared to 2009, gaining popularity and an increase in graduates who are attracted to the Tax profession as a career path.

In 2010, four out of five finalists were proud Sunway-TES students in both the individual and group categories respectively. In the individual category, the champion, 1st Runner-Up, 2nd Runner-Up and Merit award winners were Wong Xinjie, Tan Kee Hoong, Lum Kar Hoe and Lee Chuan Han respectively whereas in the group category the A-Team were champions followed by Team Pioneer( 1st Runner-Up), Team Tax Dynamics (2nd Runner-Up)and Team Taxelicious (Merit Award), all of whom comprised students of Sunway-TES.
