Celebrating Sunway A-level Students’ Achievements

Sunway College’s A-Level programme celebrated its students’ achievement and success in the November 2015 Cambridge examinations at a recent tea party. Sunway College A-Level programme continues to shine with a 100% passing rate and a record 65% of students achieving straight As (3A*/As and above).

“We are here to congratulate our students, parents and teachers for doing a great job,” said Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway University and Sunway Education Group.

She urged the students to make the right choice to do something positive to influence the future. “The future belongs to the current generation and you are our current generation. You are the ones who will carry the beacon into the future. Hence, all of you, our high achievers, actually have a great responsibility on your shoulders. You are in a position to influence a lot of change. Every little thing that you do will count to what your world, our world will become.”

From the cohort, six are heading off to University of Cambridge and two to University of Oxford to pursue studies in Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mathematics and Law.

Among those present were Serena Chia, who scored 4A* in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Psychology. She won the Top in Malaysia award for AS Level Psychology in the June 2015 examination and intends to further her studies in the United States. Reflecting on her experience, she advises future A-level students to not be afraid of straying from the norm when it comes to subject options.

“Usually A-level students will go for pure science stream subjects (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) as it keeps their path open. When I wanted to take Psychology, a lot people discouraged me. My parents weren’t really supportive of it but as I progressed and did well throughout the programme, they gradually accepted and supported my decision. I think I made a good choice as I learnt a lot from the subject,” said Chia.

Another 4A* student Kiar Cher Shen, who aims to pursue biochemistry in Stanford University, said he has received four offers from universities in the UK, which includes University College London, University of Bristol, University of Bath and King’s College London. His parents, who were also present at the celebration, are very proud and happy of their youngest son’s achievement.

“Living away from home for a year and half has made our son more independent, and we are very proud and happy with his achievement. So if he wishes to continue his study overseas, we will support his decision,” said Kiar’s mother, Lim Ser Gek.

Thanussan Sundaramoorthy from Puchong, decided to study the A-level at Sunway College after receiving good comments from his elder sister, who did the same programme here. Thanussan who is a recipient of the KPM bursary said, “The teachers are good and supportive, and the environment, together with the facilities in Sunway is good for studying. The decision to stay on campus helped me focus more on my studies too, as it was easier to form study groups and there was less distractions.”

Arshad Malik decided on Sunway College because of its reputation for the high percentage of straight As in A-level programme and had hoped to be among the top scorers. Achieving 1A* in Mathematics, 2A in Economics and Further Mathematics, and B for Physics, Arshad, has received offers from University of Southampton and Heriot-Watt University. He explained that it was a steep transition from SPM to A-level, but help and guidance from his lecturers and peers made his A-level studies an enjoyable one.

Sunway College has been offering the Cambridge GCE A-level Programme for more than two decades. Over the years, students of the Sunway College A-Level programme have been consistently achieving a pass rate of 98% and above. Tea parties held to celebrate students’ excellent results have since become a tradition.
