Sunway College AUSMATES Celebrate

“Things will happen on this journey that you couldn't have prepared for with all of the planning in the world. When faced with challenges and pit falls, you will just have to get back up, dust yourselves off, and keep going. Just remember, there are many people who believe in you and have invested much in helping you succeed to this point in your life. Now it is up to you to take advantage of what they have given you for the journey ahead,” said Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of the Sunway Education Group and Sunway University to the students of the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme of Sunway College.

Students celebrated their achievements with much joy and excitement at the AUSMAT Achievement and Appreciation Awards Ceremony 2016.

The event was to celebrate students’ achievements in the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) 2015 examinations where this time around 99.5 percent of the cohort are eligible for entry into some of the best universities around the world. Six Sunway College students achieved above ATAR 99 with 163 achieving ATAR 90 and above. 14 of the cohort who achieved an ATAR of 98 and above qualify for the Monash High Achiever Scholarship while 27 percent are eligible for the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship. Students who opt for the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship will enjoy a 75 percent tuition fee waiver for studies at Sunway University.

Nineteen year old Ng Li Ling who achieved ATAR 99.30 was happy with her results. “I feel great! I exceeded my own expectations and I am very satisfied with my achievement. It feels good to know that all my hard work has paid off.” Her mother, Mrs Ng said the whole family was very proud of Li Ling’s achievement and will fully support her in her further studies. Li Ling also received a Special Certificate of Distinction for her outstanding achievement in Accounting and Finance. Together with Li Ling, a total of 4 students in total received the Special Certificate of Distinction. The Certificate is awarded to candidates within the top 0.5 percent in the world who sat for the examination.

“I was honestly surprised. I did aim high, but I was not sure if I could do it, so it was very overwhelming when I managed to meet my target. It was very satisfying to see the hard work throughout the year pay off,” said Priscilla Faith Lim Qin Yun on her achieving ATAR 99.40. For Veanna Lee Qin Ying who achieved ATAR 99.10, she said she was happy with her result though she does wonder if she could have scored a higher ATAR if she had put in a bit more effort. She says her time in AUSMAT has, “Taught me that you have to work hard for what you want”.

The top 3 students who achieved the highest ATAR in the WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) 2015 were awarded book prizes sponsored by the Australian National University. The ceremony also paid tribute to student mentors who have volunteered their time to help their peers with their studies and the AUSMAT Student Council for the contributions.
