Top student Ho Hui Ping achieved an ATAR score of 99.85 took to the stage to receive the Special Course Award for English as Additional Language & Dialect (EALD), two Special Certificates of Distinction, one for Chemistry and another for EALD. The Special Course Award for EALD is awarded to Ho for obtaining the highest mark in EALD worldwide while the Certificate of Distinction is awarded to students who are in the top 0.5 per cent of candidates in a WACE subject in the 2014 WACE exam worldwide. Ho will be pursuing further studies in Actuarial Science at Curtin University, Perth, Australia starting February 2015.

“Ever since I enrolled in the AUSMAT programme, I aim for an ATAR of 98. Though I knew that it would not be easy, I strongly believed that it would be possible with the support and encouragement from my parents who have been with me every step of my journey,” said the 18 year old lass.
Her advice to current AUSMAT students, “Set a goal for your ATAR from the start of the AUSMAT programme and constantly work towards it with optimism. Be consistent through the year and never take any of the internal tests lightly despite their small weightage because it all adds up at the end of the day.”

Choo Xin Er who achieved ATAR 97 and Lee Jun Yi with ATAR 87.5 also received the Special Course Award for EALD. Ho together with Lee Yong Jieh, Chin Shu Wei and Le Mai Nhat Vi upon achieving an overall score of above ATAR 99, received the Achievement Award for WACE Top 1%. Their course-mates who achieved ATAR 95 and above received the Achievement Award for WACE Top 5%. This year, more than half of AUSMAT students from Sunway College are in the top 20 percentile of graduating Australian secondary school students, above 98% of them qualifying for entry into some of the best universities worldwide.
The ceremony also recognised the efforts of the AUSMAT Student Council, students who have proven that they are not only good academically but also in their time management. The Student Council members not only organise events, their additional responsibilities include taking up the role of student ambassadors and as academic mentors to their peers.
“Serving on as a student mentor is good training for you, as mentor you learn to communicate, help and lead others. Asides academic teaching and learning, it fosters good feelings among you and your peers, and provides good opportunities for increased social interaction. It also provides your mentees with a sense of being connected to the larger community”, said Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group and Sunway University. Stephen Choong Je Wei, President of the AUSMAT Student Council 2014 in his speech paid tribute to his teachers, “I believe all the awardees and myself can never be so successful without the most important individuals in Sunway, they are the AUSMAT lecturers. These lecturers not only pass on essential knowledge but instil in us knowledge of life. Lecturers of Sunway AUSMAT teaches not from books but from their hearts. Even with words, I don’t think I can be able to express how grateful I am towards these lecturers.”
Choong who will be furthering his studies in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Auckland has this to say about his AUSMAT experience, “It teaches you all about time management and trains you to become an inspiring and successful individual.”
AUSMAT at Sunway College is more than just learning in the classroom. Students get hands-on experience through out of class activities where they learn team work, interpersonal and leadership skills which help make AUSMAT a truly memorable experience. The programme is unique in the way that it focuses on the holistic development of students by addressing individual learning needs, personal growth and uses a multiple approach to problem solving and critical thinking. The AUSMAT at Sunway is an internationally recognised pre-university programme that prepares students for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and is widely accepted by universities in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Russia, Germany, Singapore and also private universities and university colleges in Malaysia.
