Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2016 Winners Awarded for Originality

Total cash prize valued at RM 22,000 and Sunway Bursaries worth RM175,000 were awarded to twenty-six deserving students in the recent annual Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2016.

For this year’s Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition, Category A (Form 1 to Form 3 students) had three prize winners who tied for third place. The three winners for Category A were Alicia Malini Samuel, Hooi Yan Ling and Rifqah Mohamed Fairuz. They each took home a cash prize of RM1,000; a Sunway bursary worth RM10,000 and a Certificate of Participation.

The first prize winner of Category B (Form 4 to Form 5 students) Tan Hoong Wei won a cash prize of RM5,000; a Sunway bursary worth RM20,000 and a Certificate of Participation. Second prize winner Thoveen Prakash Ramesh clinched a cash prize of RM3,000; a Sunway bursary worth RM15,000 and a Certificate of Participation. Third prize winner Kirubaharan Muttusamy took home a cash prize of RM1,000; a Sunway bursary worth RM10,000 and a Certificate of Participation.

10 consolation prizes were awarded for both Category A and Category B, the winners each receiving a cash prize of RM500; a Sunway bursary worth RM5,000 and a Certificate of Participation. The Sunway Bursaries offers students the option to enrol a pre-university programmes of their choosing at Sunway College, Kuala Lumpur. Sunway College offers 6 pre-university programmes: Australian Matriculation Programme (AUSMAT), Cambridge A-Level Programme (A-Level), Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP), Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY), Sunway Foundation in Arts (FOA), and Sunway Foundation in Science and Technology (FIST).

The competition, aimed to elevate the standard of English amongst secondary school students in Malaysia, evoked good response from schools around the nation, receiving over 4,000 essays via online submission. A total of 538 schools participated in the competition this year.

Also present at the ceremony were Dato’ P Kamalanathan, Deputy Minister of Education 1, Tan Sri Razman Hashim, Deputy Chairman of Sunway Group, Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group and Sunway University, Mark Disney,President of the Oxbridge Society of Malaysia, and Margaret Hall, Executive Committee Member of the Oxbridge Society of Malaysia.

The Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2016 was jointly organised by the Sunway Group, the Oxford & Cambridge Society Malaysia, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Sunway University, Monash University Malaysia, and endorsed by the Education Ministry of Malaysia.
