In lieu of the devastation the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) committed RM1 million worth of scholarships to the Mercy Malaysia’s Nepal Relief Fund last year to provide students affected by the earthquake the opportunity to take up further studies at Sunway.
After a series of stringent interview sessions with representatives from Mercy Malaysia and the Sunway Education Group, five students were selected and awarded the Sunway Mercy Nepal Relief Scholarship which covers tuition fees, accommodation and monthly living allowance during their 4 years of study at Sunway.
The five, Pratima Tamang and Bashanta Pudasaini from the Nuwakot district, Upama Pokharel from Kathmandu, Mira Silwal from the Sindhupalchowk district, and Ajnish Ghimire from the city of Bharatpur in the Chitwan district were selected from over 40 applicants to join Sunway College in its March 2016 intake.
Just a week after arriving and starting their classes on campus, in a small get-together the students met with His Excellency Dr Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat, Ambassador of Nepal; Puan Sri Dr Susan Cheah, EXCO Member, Sunway Group; Dr Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group and Sunway University; Ir Amran Mahzan, Deputy Director, Shah Fiesal Hussain, Head of Volunteer Management and Azizah Mohd Nasir, Fundraising and Sponsorships from Mercy Malaysia. At the gathering, Puan Sri Dr Susan Cheah presented a special gift of a laptop each which was a surprise to the students.

His Excellency Dr Niranjan thanked the Sunway Education Group, the JCF and Mercy Malaysia for their initiative. He urged the students to work hard for their academic excellence and expressed hope they will prove to be an asset to their country.
Dr Lee in welcoming the students to Sunway said with the scholarships, she hopes the students will take this opportunity to make full use of their time here. She expressed the hope that they have the yearning and craving, upon completion of their studies to go back, contribute and make a difference in their home country.
“My purpose here will be to learn and to improve myself, to be a better person so that I can go back and help with the development of my country,” said 18 year old Pratima.
19 year old Bashanta who lost both his parents at a young age, expressed that he was indeed happy to receive the scholarship and for the chance for a brighter future. “I feel glad to be a member of the Sunway community, I will work hard to score good marks to pursue my studies in Information Technology”.
For national basketball player Upama, she hopes she will be able to re-join the national team when she goes home. She believes her time at Sunway is a step towards a better future for her though she admits she doesn’t like being away from her family.
”I feel proud and thankful to be among the five selected, they must have seen something in me to have awarded me the scholarship“, said Mira who also hopes to further her studies in Information Technology after the Foundation in Arts (FIA) programme.
Also pleased and happy to receive the scholarship, Ajnish believes it to ease his parents’ burden of having to pay for his studies. He looks to doing his best academically and hopes to actively take part in activities and events at Sunway. Currently enrolled in the Foundation in Science and Technology (FIST) programme, he plans to do well to be able to further pursue the BSc (Hons) Medical Biotechnology at Sunway University.
The JCF was set up by Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah based on the philosophy that giving to society should never be an afterthought, but a steadfast commitment embedded in the very fabric of its past, present and future.
The JCF serves to empower youths through education which will lead them to better opportunities in life, in their careers, in building a secure future which will improve the quality of their lives, moulding them into responsible citizens who can in turn give back to the community and the country.
The Sunway Mercy Nepal Relief Scholarship is the very first scholarship by the JCF and the Sunway Education Group for international students from a developing country affected by a natural disaster. The Sunway Education Group and JCF in working together with Mercy Malaysia is extending a helping hand to those in need, ensuring them a better and brighter future.
