Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Doubles Annual Scholarship Total To Over RM 33 Million

~Minister of Education presents scholarships to recipients~

The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) doubles its scholarships awarded this year to over RM33 million, beating last year’s record of RM17.2 million. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin presented the scholarships to the recipients together with Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founding Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Chancellor of Sunway University at the annual Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Scholarships and Awards Ceremony 2014 at Sunway University Hall.


The annual JCF Scholarships & Awards Ceremony is to recognise students’ exceptional academic achievements, outstanding extra-curricular and sports accomplishments by providing deserving students opportunities for quality education.

With the latest awards, the JCF, one of the nation’s largest educational social enterprise, to date has awarded an excess of RM165 million scholarships to about 20,000 students.

“Since its inception, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has contributed noticeably towards our society. I would like to take this opportunity to warmly commend Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah on his diligent efforts to help transform and enhance our education system”, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“I look forward to seeing even more students benefit from this Jeffrey Cheah Foundation that is established in perpetuity. Well done, Tan Sri. Your visionary foresight and innovative solution to one of the most pressing needs for our socio-economic development is inspiring indeed. You have shown how big business can help the Government to strengthen national Human Capital”, he added.

At today’s ceremony, a total of 447 scholarships out of 3,500 scholarships were presented. There were five recipients each for the Sunway University Postgraduate Degree Scholarship, Sunway University Masters Degree by Research Scholarship, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award and the Sunway Talent Scholarships for Music. The Chancellor’s Scholarship, Sunway Excellence Scholarship, Sunway-Adidas Sports & ECA Achiever’s Awards had four recipients each; while the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation – Sunway Group Scholarship had three recipients. The Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Special Entrance Scholarship was awarded to one recipient while the Sunway Talent Scholarship for Sports to thirty recipients.

A total of 97 students received the Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship, while 189 students received the Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Community scholarship was given out to 17 students, while the Sunway Education Group-Elena Cooke Education Fund was presented to two recipients. The Sin Chew Daily Education Fund had 14 recipients, the Sun-MAPCU Scholarship Scheme had 12 recipients and the Star Education Fund had 13 recipients.

Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah said “I am delighted to see so many recipients this year because it demonstrates that we have an abundance of talented young people who have the potential to drive our beloved country’s progress even further.”

“The fact is, in our world today young people just like you, make up a quarter of the world’s population. Being involved in education, I am fortunate to have met many talented young men and women, who are just like you, who have stepped up to take ownership and accountability for their actions, and who work towards creating the world they want in the future. They are stepping up to help shape the world’s social and economic development, challenging social norms and values, and slowly, but surely, laying the foundation of our world’s future with passion and purpose,” said Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah.

This year the ceremony was attended by more than 700 people including scholarship recipients, their parents, teachers, corporate and education partners, and invited guests as well as academics and management of the Sunway Education Group.
