CIMP Graduates are Compassionate Intellectuals

276 Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) graduates from Sunway College recently celebrated their pre-university study accomplishments.

33 graduated with an overall average result of 90 percent and above while 82 graduates graduated with an average result between 80 and 90 percent. Top student Christie Grace, who hails from Indonesia with an overall average of 97.50 percent, received two special awards for her outstanding achievement - The General’s Medal for Academic Achievement 2013-2014 from the High Commissioner of Canada, Her Excellency Judith St George and the Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award from YBhg. Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr Susan Cheah.

Christie is currently studying at Sunway University for her Bachelor of Accounting and Finance with the awarded scholarships. She reflects that hard work and consistency helped her in becoming the top CIMP performer. She is glad with her achievements and grateful for the assistance and guidance she received from the team of Canadian certified CIMP teachers. “I couldn’t ask for better mentors and I certainly miss my CIMP teachers as they have been supportive throughout my studies. I also miss every single day I have spent as a CIMP student,” said Christie.

Asides from academic achievements, the graduates were also acknowledged for their contribution in community service. Each of the graduates contributed a minimum of 10 hours for community service while 35 contributed more than 50 hours each. They helped with clean-ups at the Zoo Negara, animal shelters, helped plant trees and spent time reading to under-privileged children.

Amongst these graduates were also members of CIMP Student Council who fundraised over RM20,000 for CIMP’s prom and various sports tournaments; and the Business Leadership Class students who fundraised over RM1,500 through their sales assignments for charities.

Christie, who was also involved in the voluntary work, said that distributing Christmas gifts to orphans, talking to homeless people and helping to distribute essential daily goods were things that she committed. Such charitable work has helped develop her empathy skills, gain insight and experience in making a difference for the less fortunate.

Students’ engagement in community service is one of Sunway’s approaches to develop students’ academic and interpersonal skills and strength. Participations outside textbook and classroom settings are solid platforms for students to explore their potentials and capabilities, and apply academic learning to real life situations. With theoretical knowledge and practical exposure, CIMP graduates are bestowed with expectations to create positive social impacts.
