Student Wins Full Scholarship in Sunway College’s VU Business Challenge

Cheah Mun Hong of SMJK Katholik, Petaling Jaya beat 95 others from secondary schools around Malaysia to emerge champion at the recent Sunway College Victoria University (VU) Business Challenge 2014. Cheah won himself a full scholarship which covers the tuition fee for the entire 3-year VU Bachelor of Business programme at Sunway College.

Wong Weng Kit from Chong Hwa Independent High School Kuala Lumpur was 1st Runner-Up, with Yang Ya-Ting from Chinese High School, Batu Pahat, Johor 2nd Runner-Up, winning themselves scholarships worth RM24,000 and RM15,000 respectively for the VU Bachelor of Business programme. Wong also emerged winner in the individual category, Challenge Your Business Knowledge. Lee Kwan Yew from Chong Hua Middle School, Port Dickson and Tan Kok Yee from Chong Hua High School, Seremban both won a Consolation prize of RM2,000 bursary each for the programme. Winners of the group category were from Chong Hua High School, Seremban; Ang Su Ki, Tey Shiao Fun, Chee Kah Mun and Tan Kok Yee.

The challenge, opened to Form 6 & Chinese Independent School students from selected secondary schools in Malaysia was a test of knowledge and skills, challenging them both mentally and physically. Students had to go through the first stage Challenge Your Business Knowledge individually and then work in a team of four for the second stage, the Business Project. The project required students to engage themselves in a business environment encompassing various aspects of business in accounting, economics and marketing. At this stage, students had to demonstrate effective problem solving and decision making skills. The top five students with the highest scores for the first two stages then moved on to the last stage for the Interview Session. In this last stage, the five finalists were tasked to answer questions related to general politics, personal development and aspirations.

The Sunway College VU Bachelor of Business is a unique programme that combines academic and practical learning experience. “This year Sunway College celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the VU-Sunway partnership. An established programme, the Australian University Programme has nurtured thousands of local and international graduates who have found employment in established firms, gone on to pursue higher qualifications or are now successful entrepreneurs in their own right”, said Mr Teo Ee Sing, Executive Director of Sunway College in his welcome speech.


The VU Business Challenge 2014 was initiated by the Sunway Marketing Department, staff members and student bodies of the VU Business Club and the Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter was designed to to test the students on intellect, logic and problem-solving skills.
