Sunway’s 6th FIA batch of budding success ready to venture the world

Sunway College’s home-grown pre-university programme, the Foundation in Arts (FIA) recently produced their 6th batch of graduates with 98 graduating students. The students who had demonstrated dedication, determination and enthusiasm throughout their course of studying the FIA programme saw their proud parents and teachers witness them making a momentous step in their graduation ceremony. Also present were Mr Lee Weng Keng, CEO Education and Health Care, Sunway Group; Professor David Ngo Chek Ling, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Sunway University; Elizabeth Lee, Executive Director, Sunway Education Group and Dr Katijah Khalid, Chief Executive, Sunway College.

53 students were awarded the Tan Sri Dato Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship to pursue their undergraduate studies in Sunway University.

The students did not only receive a certificate of completion but 53 students were awarded the Tan Sri Dato Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship. Ho Su Ann was the highest scorer with a total accumulation of 92.05% followed by Ku Gim Chai at 90.00% and Ng Wan Ru with 88.90%. The three students who were among the other scholarship recipients will continue to pursue their undergraduate studies in the BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance in the School of Business, Sunway University.

Elizabeth Lee said during her welcome remarks, “You have transformed from the day you arrived right up to the day you graduate. It is time to turn mirrors into windows and make the right decisions about your destiny”.

“The FIA programme, Sunway College’s own home-grown programme continues to draw strong support and produce quality graduates. The lecturers who have consistently delivered high standards and enthused students with a sense of curiosity and passion, dedication and the guidance of Mrs Ruma, Director of the FIA have ensured the success in the programme”. Elizabeth elaborated.

12 students also received the Certificate of Appreciation for organising extracurricular activities throughout their study course in FIA. Michelle Chu Ee Lee and Farah Naquiyah binti Roslan were awarded the Special Award of Encouragement for English and Mathematics respectively for displaying growth and achievement throughout their studying term in the FIA programme.

Mrs Ruma Lopes said, “I am so proud to see all of you move towards a brighter future. When you first came in, I could sense the nervousness that was within all of you, but today you have grown and transformed and stand before me with so much confidence”. Mrs Ruma also expressed gratitude to the parents for believing in Sunway College’s home-grown pre-university programme.

Kenneth Ng Kheng Chien, Chairman and the representative of the FIA July 2010 intake said, “Our journey is comparable to a rollercoaster ride, but we have learnt to trust through our trials and tribulations and have become what we are today because of the new people we have met and are fortunate to experience a brand new environment packed with knowledge that is sufficient for the university life and the outside world.

After his speech, Kenneth and his fellow course mates rose from their chairs and dedicated a song titled ‘You Raise Me Up’ by Josh Groban to their teachers as a thank you message. Most of the FIA July 2010 graduating class will be pursuing their undergraduate studies in Sunway University.
