More than 600 AUSMAT students participated as runners as well as served as volunteers in various areas such as first aid, photography, route marshal, registration and bazaar style booth sales. All profits raised from this event will be donated to Yayasan Generasi Gemilang, a foundation which aims to improve the lives of under-served children and families by increasing access to quality education. The funds will be channelled to its current Community Centre located in Taman Prima Selayang, to cater for children who wants a more conducive learning environment to study.

An Expedition to Remember
It was not the usual Saturday for a group of 40 AUSMAT students as they had a learning experience beyond the classroom. These students had the opportunity to participate in an excursion to visit a wildlife sanctuary. Through the initiative of their lecturer Ms. Sangeetha Muniandy, the main purpose of this outing was to understand Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and how it affects the environment.

AUSMAT Rising Star
Shireen Chin Mei Yee is no ordinary student. Juggling between her study and exams, the 18 year old student of Sunway College’s Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme, is a performer of the guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument.
The former student of Kuen Cheng High School was inspired by her mother to take up the guzheng. She started playing the instrument five years ago, and has since fallen in love with it.
“Many people do not know of the guzheng, which makes me love it more, as I can play however I want to. I'm normally an expressive person and the special characteristic of the guzheng gives me many opportunities to express my feelings.” Shireen is a member of the Yi Xiang Ler Chinese Orchestra, which creates various opportunities for her to perform. She enjoys performing for it is when she can share her music with others, “the best part of performing is being able to see my audiences’ reaction.”
Being proficient with musical instruments does not come easily as a lot of practice is required. For Shireen, she spends an hour or two a day practising when there are no exams. She normally concentrates on her studies and only practices on the guzheng when she is at home.
According to Shireen, she normally performs at dinners, at the shopping mall during Chinese New Year and charity events such as the Child Aid Asia 2015 in the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac). She recently performed in the AUSMAT Talent Time and Sunway Education Group Teachers Appreciation Day, achieving her dream of performing on stage in front of her lecturers and friends.
A recipient of the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship, Shireen enrolled into the AUSMAT programme last year. When asked how she decided Sunway College was the right one for her, she said accessible transportation and excellent facilities were main factors. She finds most interesting her lecturers, “They are passionate and humorous at the same time. I like how we get to meet different people in every class.”

AUSMAT Students Pay Tribute to Teachers
“Teachers are amazing as they are able to give us a sense of hope and ignite our imagination. For many years, I have observed how teachers teach. I have witnessed the best and the worst. Truly, the AUSMAT lecturers are some of the best. Their dedication, diligence as well as the impact they have on each and every one of us are both exemplary and exceptional. Great teachers can never tell where their influence stops. AUSMAT lecturers are exactly that. And I strongly believe that the high achievers' posters we see on the classroom walls are a testament to the unwavering commitment of an amazing team of 34 lecturers who are sitting right in front of us today”, said William Khoo Swee Keong, President of AUSMAT Student Council at the Teacher’s Appreciation Day which was organised by students of the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme at Sunway College as tribute to their lecturers.

Sunway College’s AUSMAT Students are potential Wolves of Wall Street
Simulating New York’s Wall Street, the Business Investment Challenge 2014 at Monash University saw 40 pre-university students from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Indonesia competed in investment skills. The champion team of Lee Kwok Vui and Chong Min Yu from Sunway College Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) proved to have the talents to be potential ‘wolves of Wall Street’.
Besides the team challenge, Chong also won the individual category with the highest earnings of RM5.7 million in the competition. “One has to be mentally prepared in order to win this competition. The competition is not complicated, rather I perceive the competition as a game, which helps me to stay calm and analyse the stock market better,” said Chong.

Sunway’s AUSMAT student now a nuclear physicist
Lee Boon Quan, a Sunway Australian Matriculation Programme (AUSMAT) alumnus is currently attached to the Department of Nuclear Physics in the Australian National University (ANU).
His research topic involves nuclear physics, atomic physics and medical physics. According to Boon Quan, the research that he is working on may lead to the development of a new kind of molecular radiotherapy that is based on the interaction of Auger electrons with tumours. “Ideally, the Auger ‘electron-based’ therapies only damage the tumours but not the neighbouring healthy cells,” he said. “This is because Auger electrons travel very short distance in the order of nanometre due to their low energy, so they damage only the small volume in the immediate vicinity of the radioactive isotopes.”
